Choosing the right collar for a large dog isn't simply about finding one with a big enough neck size.
Large and powerful dogs place greater demands on their gear. Collar width, construction, hardware, comfort and fit all become more important when you're handling a German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Great Dane, Bull Arab, Labrador or another large breed.
A collar that works perfectly well on a small dog may simply not provide the construction, width or security needed for a 40–60kg dog.
At Rogue Royalty, we've been designing and making dog gear for large, powerful and working breeds in Australia since 2009.
Here's what we believe large dog owners should look for when choosing a collar — and how to find the right fit for your dog.
What Makes a Good Collar for a Large Dog?
For large dogs, focus on four things:
- Appropriate collar width
- Strong, dependable hardware
- Comfortable materials against the neck
- Correct sizing and adjustment
A good large dog collar needs to provide strength and control without becoming unnecessarily heavy, restrictive or uncomfortable. And the right collar isn't necessarily the same for every dog. A Rottweiler used for daily neighbourhood walks has different requirements from a Labrador that spends every weekend swimming at the beach.
That's why your dog's lifestyle matters just as much as their size.
1. Choose the Right Collar Width
One of the biggest mistakes large dog owners make is buying a standard-width collar simply because it's available in an XL size.
A larger neck size doesn't necessarily make it a true large-dog collar.
Collar width determines how pressure is distributed across the dog's neck. A wider collar spreads leash pressure across a larger surface area rather than concentrating it over a narrow section.
This can be particularly important for powerful dogs, strong pullers and large breeds that generate considerable force when they suddenly accelerate or reach the end of the lead.
As a general guide:
| Dog Size | Suggested Collar Width |
|---|---|
| Medium–Large | 30–40mm |
| Large | 40–50mm |
| Extra Large / Giant | 48–55mm |
The dog's build matters too. A lean Dobermann may suit a different collar profile from a heavily built Rottweiler even if their neck measurements are similar.
Don't choose width based on appearance alone. Choose it for your dog's size, build and intended use.
2. Hardware Matters on Large, Powerful Dogs
A collar is only as dependable as its weakest component. The buckle, D-ring, rivets and attachment points are responsible for transferring force between your dog, collar and lead. This is why Rogue Royalty places such a strong emphasis on hardware. For large and powerful dogs, look for clearly specified, high-quality metal hardware such as solid brass or stainless steel rather than relying on vague descriptions such as "metal fittings". For our heavy-duty dog gear, we deliberately avoid plastic buckles at critical load-bearing points. When you're controlling a large dog, hardware isn't decoration.
It's part of the safety system.
3. Comfort Is Just as Important as Strength
Heavy duty shouldn't mean uncomfortable.
Large short-coated breeds such as:
- Rottweilers
- Dobermanns
- Boxers
- Bull Arabs
- Great Danes
- Weimaraners
have relatively little coat protecting the skin around the neck.
A rough inner collar surface can create unnecessary rubbing and irritation, particularly during long walks and regular daily wear. Rogue Royalty leather collars use a smooth napa calfskin inner lining designed to sit comfortably against the dog's neck while the outer bridle leather provides the structural strength.
The result is a collar built for strength without sacrificing comfort.
How to Measure a Large Dog for a Collar
Getting the fit right is critical.
Use a soft measuring tape and measure around the part of your dog's neck where the collar will naturally sit. For thick-coated dogs such as German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Huskies, make sure you're measuring the dog's actual neck rather than simply measuring loosely around the outer coat.
When selecting a size, ideally your dog's measurement should sit comfortably within the collar's adjustment range rather than at its absolute smallest or largest setting.
This gives you greater flexibility to fine-tune the fit.
Use the Two-Finger Fit Check
Once fitted, you should generally be able to slide two flat fingers comfortably underneath the collar.
Too tight can cause discomfort.
Too loose can allow the collar to move excessively or increase the risk of the dog backing out.
But don't stop there.
Check the Collar While Your Dog Moves
Have your dog:
- Walk
- Turn
- Sit
- Lower their head
- Move forward and backwards
Watch what happens to the collar.
A properly fitted collar should remain secure and comfortable rather than continually rotating or moving towards the dog's head.
This is particularly important for large, powerful or excitable dogs.
Large Dog Collar Size Guide by Breed
Breed guides should only be used as a starting point because individual dogs can vary considerably.
Always measure your actual dog before ordering.
| Large Dog Breed | Typical Neck Range | Suggested Width |
| Labrador Retriever | 45–60cm | 40–50mm |
| German Shepherd | 45–58cm | 40–50mm |
| Golden Retriever | 45–58cm | 40–50mm |
| Rottweiler | 52–70cm | 48–55mm |
| Bull Arab | 50–68cm | 45–55mm |
| Great Dane | 52–74cm | 48–55mm |
| Boxer | 42–55cm | 40–50mm |
| Weimaraner | 42–55cm | 40–48mm |
| Dobermann | 40–55cm | 35–48mm |
| Siberian Husky | 45–60cm | 40–50mm |
Breed, age, body condition, sex and individual build can all affect neck circumference.
Measure first. Order second.
Leather or Waterproof Collar for a Large Dog?
There's no single "best" material for every large dog.
The better question is: What does your dog actually do?
Leather Dog Collars for Everyday Wear
A quality wide leather dog collar is an excellent option for large dogs used primarily for everyday walking, training and general wear.
Full-grain bridle leather provides strength and durability while gradually softening and developing character through use.
Rogue Royalty's wide-fit leather collars combine:
- Full-grain bridle leather
- Soft napa calfskin lining
- Heavy-duty metal hardware
- Wide-fit construction
- No plastic load-bearing buckles
- 10-year craftsmanship warranty*
They're particularly suited to owners who want strength, comfort and premium styling in one collar.
Waterproof Collars for Swimming and Adventure
If your dog loves water, mud, beaches and outdoor adventures, we'd choose something different.
Repeated exposure to water — particularly salt water — isn't ideal for leather.
That's where a waterproof dog collar makes more sense.
The Rogue Royalty SUPATUFF® Heavy Duty Collar is built for large, active dogs using double-ply webbing and stainless-steel hardware.
It's:
- Waterproof
- Weather resistant
- Rot resistant
- Built with stainless-steel hardware
- Free from plastic buckles
- Designed for active and powerful dogs
- Backed by our lifetime guarantee*
Swim. Hike. Train. Get filthy.
Wash it down and go again.
The Two-Collar Setup We Recommend for Active Large Dogs
For dogs that spend time both around town and in the water, having two collars can make more sense than trying to make one material do everything.
Everyday:
Wide-fit leather collar for comfort, everyday walking and style.
Water & adventure:
SUPATUFF® collar for swimming, beaches, hiking, mud and wet conditions.
Your leather stays out of the ocean, while your waterproof collar takes the punishment.
Simple.
Can Large Dogs Slip Out of Their Collar?
Yes. And with a large or powerful dog, correct fit becomes especially important. Dogs can sometimes back out of a loose collar by lowering their head and reversing against the lead.
This is why simply knowing the dog's neck circumference isn't enough.
Check that:
- The collar passes the two-finger fit test
- It remains secure when your dog moves
- It cannot easily slide forward over the head
- The buckle and D-ring are positioned correctly
- The collar isn't being worn excessively loose
Dogs with unusual neck-to-head proportions may require a different collar style or walking setup. If your dog is an established escape artist, speak with an experienced trainer about an appropriate secure handling system rather than relying on a standard flat collar alone.
Common Mistakes When Buying a Collar for a Large Dog
Buying an XL Size in a Lightweight Collar
An XL neck adjustment doesn't automatically mean the collar has been designed for an XL dog. Look at the webbing or leather width, buckle, D-ring and overall construction, not just the size label.
Choosing Looks Before Construction
There's nothing wrong with wanting your dog to look good — that's very much part of what we do. But style shouldn't replace function. For a large dog, examine what's underneath the design.
Leather. Webbing. Buckle. D-ring. Rivets. Stitching. Construction.
That's what ultimately matters.
Using Leather for Regular Swimming
Leather and repeated water immersion aren't a great combination. If your large dog regularly swims, give them dedicated waterproof gear and save their leather collar for dry adventures.
Never Rechecking the Fit
Dogs change. Weight gain, weight loss, coat changes and growth can all alter collar fit. Puppies and adolescent large breeds should be checked particularly frequently.

Frequently Asked Questions About Large Dog Collars
What is the best collar for a large dog?
The best collar depends on the dog's size, build and lifestyle. Large dogs generally benefit from an appropriately wide collar, dependable hardware and comfortable materials. Leather is an excellent choice for everyday dry use, while waterproof webbing with stainless-steel hardware is better suited to regular swimming and wet adventures.
How wide should a collar be for a large dog?
Many large dogs suit collars approximately 40–50mm wide, while some extra-large and giant breeds may suit widths approaching 48–55mm. Body shape and intended use should also be considered rather than selecting collar width based solely on weight.
What collar is best for a German Shepherd?
German Shepherds generally benefit from strong, appropriately wide collars with dependable hardware. For everyday use, a wide leather collar can provide strength and comfort. German Shepherds that regularly swim or spend time outdoors may be better suited to a waterproof collar such as SUPATUFF®.
What collar is best for a Rottweiler?
For a powerful breed such as a Rottweiler, look for appropriate width, strong construction, dependable hardware and a comfortable inner surface. Wide-fit leather collars are excellent for everyday use, while heavy-duty waterproof collars suit swimming and outdoor activity.
Are wide collars better for large dogs?
A wider collar distributes leash pressure across a greater neck surface than a narrow collar, which can make it more appropriate and comfortable for many large and powerful dogs. The correct width will depend on the dog's size, neck length, build and how the collar is being used.
Are leather collars good for large dogs?
Quality full-grain leather can be an excellent material for large dog collars because it combines durability with comfort and develops a softer, more conforming feel with use. Leather is best kept away from repeated swimming and salt-water immersion.
What collar should I use for a large dog that swims?
A waterproof collar with corrosion-resistant hardware is generally a better choice for regular swimmers. Rogue Royalty's SUPATUFF® collars use double-ply webbing with stainless-steel hardware and are designed for water, weather and active use.
